With a title that more closely translates from the Japanese to 'Then to become a father', the film follows the internal journey of Ryota Nonomiya (Masaharu Fukuyama), a conservative and hardworking young father who discovers that his son is not his biological offspring. Hirokazu Koreeda's most recent film, Like Father, Like Son (2013), won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where Steven Spielberg picked up the rights for an American remake. THIS CANNES JURY PRIZE-WINNING FILM USES THE STORY OF TWO BOYS SWITCHED AT BIRTH TO REINVIGORATE THE NATURE-VERSUS-NURTURE DEBATE, WRITES SARINAH MASUKOR. CULTURES THE WORLD OVER HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PREOCCUPIED WITH IDEAS LIKE 'BLUE BLOOD' AND 'BLOOD BEING THICKER THAN WATER'. With the rating i gave dont think its a horrible film its a good watch i would encourage for u to watch it on ur own i was giving it the overall rate for the whole production, but even with that i would say check it out. Acting skills not the greatest alot but from the main male did a decent job. i give it an 7.0 since they did include some more hard steamy scenes that most actors shy away from. Some were excessive but it didnt disappoint in the end.
This film how ever also Kept closely in touch with reality in terms of family issues and struggles most gay men face. Who doesnt love a Gay film that has a good ending i have watch alot of BL films that dont often end pleasantly to the viewer instead deal with a harsher reality that is beautiful and sad all on its own. Rewatch Value 6.5 For the Small Budget that this Film had, i have to say it was a nice piece of work in terms of story.Yes there were many flaws throughout the film but putting that aside with the small production im assuming.
